Martini Wednesday with All Us All the Time

Cat in the Hat Martini
The Cat in the Hat turns 50 years old this year and was celebrated by the NEA’s Read Across America on March 2nd, which would have been Dr. Seuss’s 103rd birthday. It is not too late to get into the festivities. You can still send the Cat in the Hat a Birthday card, and Random House Children’s Books will donate one book to First Book from now until May 1, 2007, limit one birthday card per person. You can create your Cat in the Hat birthday card online or you can mail-in your own hand-made card. Details on how to send your birthday card can be found at Seussville.

Meanwhile, to celebrate the Seuss this month we are going to have a different Martini each Wednesday through March themed after one of those delightful stories. Hum, perhaps an odd combination? Oh let’s face it, you are never too old for Dr. Seuss and there is always a reason for a martini. So make your martini, create your birthday card, and oh, by the way....have you seen my moss-covered 3-handled family gradunza?!?

Cat in the Hat Martini
  • 1 oz Grenadine
  • 1 oz White Crème de Cacao
  • 1 oz Sloe Gin
  • Red and white gum drops
  • Optional: Red or white sugar
First pour the grenadine into a chilled martini glass. Then rest the rounded part of a spoon against the inside of the glass. Carefully and slowly pour in the White Crème de Cacao onto the spoon so it runs down the inside of the glass and layers smoothly. Do this same step again pouring in the sloe gin. Then garnish your drink with a small wooden skewer with a red, white, and red gum drop.

Optional: Start by putting red or white sugar on a small plate. Then take your chilled martini glass, dipping the edges in cold ice-water then dipping the glass in red or white sugar.
